Calgary: boom city in a land flowing with oil and high wages. The number and variety of restaurants is extensive. Chinese restaurants and pizza parlours abound. Coffee and donut shops are everywhere. Hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts cater to the visitor, whether on business or pleasure. The night life is exciting with pubs, bars, lounges, and night clubs indulge every taste. There are ample facilities for banquets and the larger social or business gatherings. Styles vary from fast food to fine dinning, from sushi bars to pancake houses and the ubiquitous burger joint. Fish and chips is rare on the prairies there are far more steak houses.

Calgary with a metro population of over one million has had a culture of hotel saloons, western bars, night clubs, and hockey, but this is changing. Calgary is evolving into one of Canada's most cosmopolitan cities and a major cultural centre with a vast array of ethnic cuisine. And many upscale dinning rooms. Restaurants from a host of ethnic groups abound: Thai, several varieties of Chinese, Indian, Italian, and Japanese. 17th Avenue SE is also called International Avenue and the Bridgeland neighbourhood hosts Little Italy.

Festivals

The ultimate festival is the Calgary stampede, held for 10 days in the second week of every July, drawing over a million and a quarter visitors. City wide pancake breakfasts are traditional, and the Stampede serves two tonnes of bacon and sausage, 5,000 bottles of pancake syrup and 85,000 containers of juice each year.

Other major annual festivals include the growing Calgary International Film Festival, the Calgary Folk Music Festival, The Greek Festival, Carifest, the second largest Caribbean festival in the country, Lilac Festival, FunnyFest, Calgary Comedy Festival, GlobalFest, the Calgary Fringe Festival, Summerstock, and Expo Latino.
